Coro Vocals – Music
- Who sings it Chorus (the coristas, sometimes the horns too)
- Purpose Repetition, hook and rhythmic anchor
- Characteristics Short, catchy, often syncopated
The coro sings a repeating phrase (the estribillo).
- Often short, catchy and easy to remember.
- Musically stable, so that the dancers and listeners have a hold.
- Usually sung in harmony, in several voices.
The coro stays the same while the pregón changes constantly — together they form the call-and-response of the montuno.
🔁 Contracoro
A longer first coro is often followed by a shorter, clipped second coro. The contracoro is the answer to it: a short phrase played back by the percussion and/or horns.
