Obligado - element
A fixed, arranged passage that the whole band, or a group of instruments, plays exactly together. "Obligado" literally means "obligatory": everyone plays the same accents, with no room for improvisation.
🎼 Where do you hear it?
- Intros: a tight ensemble riff to open the song.
- Transitions: between the verse and the montuno, or between two montuno rounds.
- Unison lines: piano, bass and horns play the same melody or rhythm together.
- Endings: a tight closing figure or the final hits of the coda.
A bloque is the typical timba form of an obligado: a short series of ensemble hits within the montuno that interrupts the groove and often announces a gear change.
Every bloque is an obligado, but not every obligado is a bloque.

Obligados are fixed, so in a song you know you can predict them. Many dancers hit them with stops or accents.
